REMS Pre-Enrollment
The REMS web portal includes facilities for citizens to
pre-enroll themselves and for authorized government personnel to pre-enroll
citizens who call in their request.
Senior
Facilities
Operators of Senior Facilities may use the REMS portal to
pre-enroll and to create their own wristbands. This will allow them to contribute to the
REMS Locator System in the event of evacuation handled by the facility
itself. Having wristbands already
prepared also makes evacuation by State vehicles more efficient.
Pre-Enrollment Confirmation
REMS can
be integrated with existing commercial-off-the-shelf computerized calling
systems to verify that pre-enrollment information is still accurate. These are systems that use voice prompts to
have citizens verify their address and their need to stay on the list.
The phone numbers and address information come directly from the REMS
database. During the automated call, when a citizen presses the number
indicating a change in address or status, the call would be automatically
transferred to a ‘311’ Operator. The Operator would then use the REMS web
portal to make the change. This would help ensure that First Responders
are not wasting their time because of inaccurate data in the system.

Schools
Pre-enrollment for school children is accomplished through
Project MyKids. This is a web portal
for schools where information and photos provided for student ID cards is
used for pre-enrollment into the REMS evacuation database.
The special student ID card issued through Project MyKids
contains information regarding guardians and medical conditions in encrypted two-dimensional
bar codes. This design was the result
of the serious legal issues that arose in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina,
regarding who was legally authorized to take custody of a child.
These cards also contain embedded RFID tags so that they
can be used in lieu of a wristband in mass evacuation situations.
